WRITER, THINKER, POKER PLAYER

My name is Alex O'Brien and I am a science writer. My work has appeared in publications such as The Guardian, BBC, New Scientist and The Times.

I was shortlisted for Best Newcomer in 2016 by the Association of British Science Writers where I am now vice-chair. My passion is to support and encourage young people to ask the right questions which is why I am an advocate for early critical thinking; in 2022 together with my husband I founded the UK Young Science Writer Award, aimed at engaging state-educated young people toward a career in STEM related subjects. It is generously supported our by friends at the ABSW, Royal Institution and BBC.

When I don't write, I play poker. I am an internationally competitive poker player. In my first book 'The Truth Detective' I managed to combine both my passions and wrote a non-fiction science book on how to think like a poker player.
